What It Does

Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects do not support variable fonts out of the box. VariFont fills that gap by adding native variable font support to both applications, letting you use and animate fonts that have built-in axis variability such as weight, width, and slant.

Variable fonts work by embedding the interpolation logic into the font file itself, rather than shipping separate bold, light, or condensed variants. VariFont exposes those axes inside Premiere Pro and After Effects so you can keyframe them directly on a timeline.

Key Features

Axis animation. Animate any variable axis (weight, width, slant, and custom axes depending on the font) as a standard keyframeable property. Useful for kinetic typography where the text weight pulses or shifts over time.

Animators system. Beyond simple axis keyframing, the Animators feature adds Range selection, Shape control, and Randomness to variable font properties. This lets you stagger or randomize axis values across individual characters, similar to how After Effects text animators work for position or opacity.

Multi-Frame Rendering support. As of v2.0, the plugin is compatible with After Effects Multi-Frame Rendering, which speeds up export on modern multi-core machines.

Apple Silicon native. Version 2.0 added M1/Apple Silicon compatibility, so there are no performance penalties on newer Mac hardware.

Who It’s For

Motion graphics artists working with editorial-grade type treatments will get the most out of VariFont. It is particularly useful when you want to animate font weight or width as part of a title sequence, or when a brand uses a variable font and you need to match specific axis values that static font instances do not cover. Editors doing lower-thirds or on-screen graphics in Premiere Pro can also benefit if their typography workflow involves variable fonts.

Compatibility spans Premiere Pro and After Effects from CC 2019 through the 2024 versions.
