What It Does

GPUResize is a GPU-accelerated scaling plugin for Premiere Pro and After Effects that replaces the host application’s built-in interpolation with a wider set of algorithms. Native Premiere Pro scaling gives you limited options. GPUResize lets you pick the right filter for your specific footage, whether you’re upscaling pixel art to 4K, downsampling 8K camera files, or anything in between.

A free trial is available, and the plugin uses a pay-what-you-want pricing model.

Key Features

Multiple interpolation filters. The real value here is the range of algorithms. Each one behaves differently and suits different material:

  • Nearest neighbor keeps pixels sharp, ideal for pixel art and retro animations
  • Bilinear matches the classic After Effects pre-CC “Best” quality setting
  • Triangle is a cubic filter, slightly smoother than bilinear
  • Catmull-Rom gives sharp results with cubic spline interpolation
  • Mitchell is a neutral cubic filter well-suited to downsampling real-world footage without introducing ringing or blurring
  • Lanczos3, Lanczos4, Lanczos6 are high-quality filters that preserve sharpness and detail, with the number indicating the window size in pixels
  • Kaiser is similar to Lanczos but produces smoother results
  • Bell and B-Spline offer additional smooth cubic options

Multipass downscale. Uses mipmap-style filtering across multiple passes. Recommended when downsampling by more than 2x, such as reducing 4K or 8K footage to 1080p while retaining as much detail as possible.

Stairstep upscale. Upscales incrementally in small steps rather than one large jump. Works with any of the interpolation filters listed above. Useful for extreme upscaling ratios, though render times will increase with complex filters like Lanczos or Kaiser at large scale jumps.

GPU-accelerated via WebGPU. Processing happens on the GPU rather than the CPU, making the plugin usable in real time rather than requiring long preview renders.

Who It’s For

Editors working with mixed-resolution footage will get the most from this. If you’re combining SD archival material with HD or 4K sequences, or delivering 4K downscales from 8K originals, having control over the interpolation method makes a visible difference. It’s also useful for motion graphics work involving pixel art or retro-style animation where nearest-neighbor scaling is essential.
