What It Does
JPEG Glitch takes a direct approach to glitch art: it actually breaks the JPEG compression algorithm in a controlled way rather than faking the look with color shifts or displacement maps. Each frame is converted to JPEG internally, glitches are introduced during compression, and the output is returned as a normal image your renderer can handle without errors. The result is a glitch aesthetic that’s only achievable through real JPEG compression, not something you can replicate with built-in effects.
Premiere Pro support was added in version 1.0.6 (March 2025), so it works natively in your timeline alongside After Effects.
Key Features
Compression and Broken Bytes. Two core parameters drive the effect. Compression ratio controls how much image information is preserved, which in turn affects how dramatic other settings behave. Broken Bytes sets how many bytes get altered in the compressed data. Worth noting: Broken Bytes produces different results on macOS versus Windows, so shared projects across platforms may look different.
Quantization Table manipulation. The quantization table is a key part of JPEG compression quality. You can manually change specific values in the 64-value table (by position and target value), or set a range of values to be randomized up to a defined maximum. These controls give you precise or chaotic results depending on how you dial them in.
Advanced and Broken Tools settings. A set of additional parameters that reward experimentation. Tweaking them individually produces one set of results; combining them with the compression and quantization controls opens up a wide range of looks.
Real-time processing. No waiting for renders to preview the effect. The plugin processes frames quickly enough to give you live feedback while adjusting parameters.
Crash protection. Glitched bytes stay inside the conversion stage. The output file is always a valid image, so broken-looking frames won’t corrupt your render.
Who It’s For
Editors and motion designers working on music videos, title sequences, or any project that calls for a corrupted-data visual style. It’s also useful for content creators who want JPEG-specific glitch aesthetics without writing any code. Because the effect operates at the compression algorithm level, it produces artifacts that look genuinely different from standard RGB-shift or pixel-sort glitch plugins.
Pricing
JPEG Glitch is sold as a pay-what-you-want download through aescripts.com. You choose what to pay, with a single-user license. Floating Server and Render-Only license options are also available. A free trial is available for download before purchasing.
It’s also included in the Glitch Bundle alongside Data Glitch 2, Pixel Sorter 3, Datamosh 2, Glitch Control, and memleak, which saves around 25% compared to buying individually.
