What It Does
Quick Matte generates alpha mattes using AI to isolate subjects from their backgrounds, removing the need for manual rotoscoping or green screen setups. It works on any scene, not just controlled studio footage, making it useful when you’re cutting together interviews, documentary footage, or run-and-gun material where you had no control over the background.
Version 2.0 (released March 2026) introduced updated models and additional features, building on a foundation that has seen regular performance and compatibility updates since its initial 2023 release.
Key Features
BiRefNet model. The core AI model used for background removal. BiRefNet is known for producing high-quality mattes on complex scenes with fine detail like hair or transparent objects.
Tiling mode with ViTMatte. For particularly difficult clips, an advanced tiling approach uses the ViTMatte model to handle edge cases where the standard pass falls short.
GPU-accelerated rendering. The render engine uses your GPU for processing. Version 1.2 brought a significant speedup alongside improved GPU compatibility, including fixes for RTX 5000 series cards.
Compatibility across hosts. Supports Premiere Pro and After Effects 2022 through 2026. A beta OFX build also extends support to Nuke and DaVinci Resolve.
Who It’s For
Editors and compositors who regularly need clean subject isolation but don’t have access to green screen setups, or who are working with archival and documentary footage. It also suits motion graphics artists who want to place subjects over custom backgrounds without spending hours on rotoscoping. The free trial lets you test it on your own footage before committing.
